The San Diego Perinatal Center: The Recommended Choice for Prenatal Care

The physicians of Children’s Specialists Maternal-Fetal Medicine (Perinatology) Division have been providing cutting edge prenatal diagnosis and high-risk pregnancy care to San Diego, Riverside and Imperial counties since 1990. They work closely with the other divisions of Children’s Specialists to provide a comprehensive approach to prenatal care. The San Diego Perinatal Center houses the division’s outpatient services. Programs at the Center count on the expertise of on-site perinatologists, genetic counselors, sonographers, pediatric dysmorphologists, and molecular geneticists.

Fully accredited by the American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, The San Diego Perinatal Center is a state approved prenatal diagnostic center. Over 5,000 targeted (Level 2) ultrasounds are performed annually at the center using the very latest in ultrasound technology. Available diagnostic procedures include:

  • multifetal pregnancy reduction
  • chorionic villus sampling
  • amniocentesis
  • percutaneous umbilical blood sampling (PUBS)
  • fetal transfusion
  • nuchal translucency screening

In addition to prenatal diagnosis and ultrasound, members of the division work closely with referring physicians to provide consultation and guidance in managing high-risk pregnancies. The division’s Diabetes and Pregnancy Program has been one of the most productive California Diabetes and Pregnancy, Sweet Success, program affiliates for the past decade. Its multiple gestation program offers specialized care to complicated twin and higher order multiple gestations. Division members provide inpatient services at Sharp Mary Birch Hospital for Women where they host an active transport service and accept the transfer of high-risk pregnant women from the Southern California area.

Also active in clinical research, division members are currently the principal investigators on three multi-center prospective trials involving fetal pulse oximetry, fetal fibronectin and novel methods of cervical length measurement.
